Description: The mission of the Dallas Museum of Natural History is to further an understanding and appreciation of the natural world through collection-based research, education and exhibition programs; to further an understanding of the biological diversity and natural history of Texas; and to preserve the collections for the enlightenment and enjoyment of future generations. Since its founding in 1936, the Museum has played a significant role in documenting, describing and showcasing Texas' vast natural diversity. The current collection of over 280,000 specimens includes the world's largest exhibition of Texas wildlife habitats, and the first mounted Texas dinosaur in Texas.
Profile: The Dallas Museum of Natural History has plans for a "Ancient America Hall," which will interpret the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex, illustrate archaeological principles, and discuss the peopling of the New World. Artifacts sought as part of the affiliation on long-term loan from the Smithsonian would come from the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of Natural History.
In addition, the museum hosted the National Museum of Natural History's traveling Insect Safari from March 31-April 1, 2001. The Dallas Museum of Natural History has requested minerals from the National Museum of Natural History, which along with various minerals from the collections of the Dallas Museum of Natural History, will be featured in its exhibit “Mineral Majesty” which will be on display from January – May 2005.
