Description: Housed in a historic structure built for the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935-36, the San Diego Air and Space Museum serves the community of San Diego by holding regular education activities for local schools and offers free tours and workshops for the public. Their mission is to celebrate aviation and space flight history through preservation of significant artifacts, presentation of dynamic exhibits, and commemoration of the men and women who forged aerospace history. The museum aims to educate the public about the social and historical significance of aerospace technology and its promise for the future. Their goal is to inspire students to excel in technology, mathematics and the sciences and encourage all museum visitors to become life-long learners in support of aerospace advancement.
Profile: The San Diego Air and Space Museum has worked with the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum since the 1980's, the collaboration has cared for significant aircraft and preserved them for future generations. The San Diego Aerospace Museum currently hosts loans from the National Air and Space Museum, including an Apollo 9 Command Module. The museum continues this relationship and hopes to host more objects with a connection to southern California's rich history of aviation and space exploration.
