Raíces Latin Music Museum

Description: The Raíces Latin Music Museum is a comprehensive, multi-media collection describing and documenting the history and evolution of Latin Music in New York City. Founded in 1979 by musician/educators Ramon Rodriguez, Louis Bauzo and Joe Conzo, Raices has been declared an American Treasure by the White House and National Trust for Historic Preservation. Concentrating on the contributions of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, the collection acknowledges African roots and European influences and holds over 15,000 artifacts including photographs, scores, manuscripts and original parts, audio recordings, rare and out-of-print books and magazines, oral histories, artist bios, instruments, videos, posters, artifacts and other memorabilia.

Profile: The collection's ultimate goal is to establish a physical presence in East Harlem to develop exhibitions, educational programs and performances, as well as serve as the primary center for research on Latin music.
