About the Local Area

SERC encompasses nearly 3,000 acres of undeveloped land along the Rhode River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.

SERC is in southern Anne Arundel County, Maryland, an area where agriculture and horse farms are still regular features of the landscape. The Chesapeake Bay is a predominant feature and an important economic resource for the county which. has more coastline on the Chesapeake Bay than any other part of Maryland. Elevations range from sea level to 317 feet. The county has a population of 447,700 people, just a little under 10% of the total population of Maryland.

The historic waterfront city of Annapolis lies just a few miles north of SERC and is easily accessible by boat or car. With Washington, D.C., a mere 25 miles west of the center and Baltimore, Maryland, about 30 miles to the North, SERC’s nearly 3,000 acres of wilderness is a unique and valuable environment nestled within a hub of metropolitan America.
