Illuminated by spotlights, the Washington Monument gleams against the nighttime sky
Lance Wills (North Charleston, SC)
Photographed April 2007, Washington, DC
Photographing the Washington Monument late one night, Wills watched tourists get up close to stroke the stone. "It struck me that like America itself, the Washington Monument could not be fully appreciated from afar. Its grandeur grows as you approach." —Abigail Tucker

I would pick the "A Navajo guide awaits a group of tourists Tom Gillespie (Trinity, NC)" as the top picture. The second best picture was Illuminated by spotlights, the Washington Monument gleams against the nighttime sky Lance Wills (North Charleston, SC)

I love the solidity of the photo. The illuminated foundation of the Washington Monument strikes with me the strength of our nation.

One of the most striking photos that I have seen in a while. The photographer has an incredible eye for capturing the scene. I would definitely place my vote on this photo.

If this is "Americana", what a sad statement - an armed sentry posted to guard a monolith. While technically a good photo, it certainly speaks volumes of what the USA has become, and represents a grim reminder of why I expatriated to a peace-loving country. (Costa Rica)

I am actually surprised that this picture was chosen as winner of the category. I, personally, would have chosen the little league picture. At first glance it seems as an obvious choice as a good example of American life. I do recognize WHY it was chosen though. It is such an interesting take on such a well known patriotic scene.
