The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association announces another coffee concert in its ongoing concert series. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Arlene Crawford will conduct the choir and orchestra while they perform John Rutter's ''Magnificat'' and Gabriel Faure's ''Requiem'' this Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

Mark your calendars and call your friends -- Souper Bowl 2009, the Oak Ridge Art Center's annual soup dinner fundraiser, will be held on Friday evening, Jan. 30 at the Art Center.

The Oak Ridge Art Center, located at 201 Badger Ave., is offering an array of classes which begin next week. Most of the classes meet one evening a week for eight weeks, and tuition ranges from $80 to $120, depending on the course and on whether the student is an Art Center member.

The Oak Ridge Community Band is inviting all area residents and music lovers to attend the annual Showcase Concert at the Grove Theater Performing Arts Center, 123 Randolph Road, on Jan. 25, at 3:30 p.m.

Well, I never! Let's see if I have this inventory right. The tools needed for the memorable Oak Ridge Symphony concert performed Saturday night at the Oak Ridge High School under the direction of ORCMA's treasured Maestro Cornelia Kodkani-Laemmli were as follows: Four transparent bowls of water about the size of baptismal fonts; several mikes; at least three salad bowls for inverting in the water; several Chinese gongs for dipping in water and resonating on their way out; six bare hands for cupping, slapping, palming, or conducting water; several multi-sized Perspex tubes (cylinders); at least three unconventional jugs to be played by bowing, and a fascinating array of sticks and stones to beat the band -- er, to beat the drums. And oh yes, let's not forget the usual combination of orchestral instruments, musicians, and a conductor who always keeps things interesting.
