Pre-Remedial

The Pre-Remedial Section of the Superfund program is responsible for discovering and assessing sites as possible candidates for the National Priorities List.

There are several ways by which a site is discovered. The site may be referred to the EPA by a state's environmental agency, a local business, or a concerned citizen. The site may also be discovered by the US Coast Guard or by the EPA itself. If there is a particular area in your neighborhood that you would like to see investigated, you may contact the EPA through the:

or you may contact the EPA Pre-Remedial Section who will be able to forward a site referral form to you.

Once a site has come to the attention of the EPA, it is evaluated for the type and degree of contamination. If the contamination is of an immediate threat to the health of people living in the area, then the EPA will handle the situation as an emergency response. If the contamination on site does not constitute an emergency, the site then undergoes a multi-phased investigative process to determine if a site is eligible to be placed on the National Priorities List (NPL), at which point Superfund monies will be available for further investigation and cleanup. These investigations can be conducted by the EPA, or by the State in cooperation with the EPA.

All information about a site that has been investigated by the EPA is managed in the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Information System, or CERCLIS. This data is available to you at the Superfund Site Information web page. You may also request site files through the Freedom of Information Act, FOIA, web page, or by contacting Wanda Vasquez, EPA Region 2's Freedom of Information Officer at 212-637-3668.
