The National Portrait Gallery charges outside fees to organizations or individuals to use an image as determined by the nature of the use/product, not the user. The gallery reserves the right to deny permission to any request. The resulting funds are used to assist the institution to further its responsibility to care for collections, promote research, and educate the public.
The Gallery does not permit the use of color slides for reproduction or duplication.
Requests for fee reductions and/or waivers must be made in writing.
Product definitions:
Nonprofit product: a product produced and distributed free of charge, at cost, or at a minimal charge
above the cost of production generally by a nonprofit organization, with the proceeds
to be used solely for educational purposes.
Commercial product: a product produced by a commercial entity or by a nonprofit entity for profit-making,
commercial purposes. All requests for images that will be utilized in large
commercial products (over 10,000 print run) should be directed to Art Resource
in New York City for processing and will be subject to their standard fees.
