STC/MS Teacher Guides

The Science and Technology Concepts for Middle Schools  TM (STC/MS) Teacher's Guides (TGs) offer step-by-step instruction for teachers to engage their students in inquiry-based science learning. Developers of the STC/MS curriculum worked with master teachers and scientists to ensure that each module's learning activities are effective in the classrrom and reflect current scientific thinking.

The TGs are offered in an easy-to-use binder format. This format allows teachers to remove materials for photocopying and to add materials as necessary following professional development.

Each TG provides a thorough overview of the module, its pedagogy, materials and classroom management. Features include:

  • Background information for teachers who are not familiar with the science content
  • Step-by-step teaching strategies for each lesson
  • Common student misconceptions
  • Safety information, including a sample student safety contract
  • Blackline masters for student activities
  • Information on the Anchor Activity, a student research project that pulls together the concepts learned in the module
  • Assessment tools and scoring rubrics
  • Suggestions for the integration of educational technology
  • Suggestions for homework and extension activities
  • A section on the National Science Education standards and how they are addressed by the module
  • A bibliography of additional resources
