Top Honor for MDOT Draws Dingell's Praise

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following comments after it was announced that the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) received the James L. Oberstar Safe Routes to School Award:

“Today I would like to congratulate the Michigan Department of Transportation for being the first recipient of the James L. Oberstar Safe Routes to School Award.  The award is being named after a real giant in Congress, my friend and colleague James Oberstar (D-MN08) , and I am honored that my home state has received this distinction.  This is a tremendous honor and I am pleased the National Center for Safe Routes to School has recognized the work of MDOT.  Under MDOT’s guidance, the program has grown from 11 schools to 218 schools throughout the State of Michigan.  By encouraging our children to be active and walk or bike to school, we are instilling in our children the importance of physical fitness and enjoyment the great outdoors and fantastic trails that Michigan has to offer.  Michigan is fortunate to have a program such as Safe Routes to School, and the great work of Governor Jennifer Granholm and MDOT is a testament to the value Michigan places on the safety and health of our children.”
