Dingell Salutes Ann Arbor Student and Teacher for National Recognition

Huron High Senior Katie Everett Selected as a Presidential Scholar

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) proudly congratulates Katie Everett of Ann Arbor Huron High School and Terence Vogel, also of Ann Arbor Huron High School, for being selected as one of 139 Presidential Scholars and receiving the Teacher Recognition Award respectively.  Presidential scholars are selected by the 29-member Commission on Presidential Scholars and the U.S. Department of Education, and each Scholar is also asked to nominate their most inspiring and challenging teacher to participate in the recognition events.

Congressman Dingell made the following comments about Ms. Everett, Mr. Vogel and these special honors:

“Ms. Everett joins a distinguished, but small, group of recipients of the Presidential Scholar award. This is not a distinction that you apply for, but in fact the Commission comes to the student and asks them to apply. I applaud the Everett family and I hope they can be here in Washington when all the students are honored for their work. I also applaud Mr. Vogel for his outstanding work.  Teaching can be a thankless job at times; however, it is critical to both the students and the State of Michigan that our teachers continue to inspire excellence in the classroom.”

The Scholars will visit Washington as guests of the Commission June 21-24, to participate in a series of educational, cultural and celebratory events that culminate in a White House-sponsored award ceremony.

May 6th, is National Teacher Day and Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4 – May 10.  National Teacher Day, sponsored by the National Education Association, is a time for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives.
