A 35-year-old Santa Maria strawberry grower, Jesus Castillo is using new farming techniques that conserve water, reduce erosion and require less fertilizer.  The techniques Castillo has implemented on his 40 acres of strawberries southwest of Santa Maria, California, recently earned him an Outstanding Achievement Award from the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts and NRCS.

NRCS engineers from the northeast states get together each year to learn about recent engineering theory and practices at the Fall Engineering and Technology Symposium (FEATS). This year, Indiana hosted the event and showed that there are both large and small things happening in the Hoosier State.

Through a partnership with the Iowa Department of Transportation and Coca-Cola, the Iowa NRCS is helping to educate thirsty travelers about the soil and water conservation efforts of Iowa farmers at a conservation-themed Interstate rest stop.

NRCS Agricultural Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) Director L. Pete Heard was recently presented the prestigious C. W. Watson Award by the 16-state Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, the Southeastern Section of the Wildlife Society, and the Southern Division of the American Fisheries Society at the 2007 Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Conference in Charleston, West Virginia.

Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hammond Bennett visit Coon Valley, Wisconsin (NRCS image -- click to enlarge).  In 1933, a new federal agency, the Soil Erosion Service, (predecessor of the Soil Conservation Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service) selected the Coon Creek watershed in southwestern Wisconsin as the first watershed in which to demonstrate the values of soil conservation measures.  Read about this pioneer conservation demonstration site.

NRCS This Week
features a weekly historical photo and caption.  NHQ, districts, States, RC&D councils, and all other NRCS entities are invited to submit a historical photo of activities or individuals who have worked or are working for the agency along with a caption.
