This September 1936 photo of a log check dam was taken by an NRCS employee named Hufnagle on the Cedar County, Nebraska, property of Gerhardt and Florence Heine.  As a part of the Albion Project serviced by Hartington Camp, the log check dam was located at the head of a formerly active gully.  Notes written on the back of the photo describe the structure as, “adequate to check any further soil washing until the vegetative control is established permanently.  Vegetation and trees will be planted to achieve the purpose of this log dam.” (NRCS photo  -- click to enlarge

Thanks to Nebraska NRCS Lewis and Clark Natural Resource District Secretary Diane Wieseler who sent us this photo.  Diane is related to the Heine family and currently lives about five miles from the site where the photo was taken.

NRCS This Week features a weekly historical photo and caption.  NHQ, districts, States, RC&D councils, and all other NRCS entities are invited to submit a historical photo of activities or individuals who have worked or are working for the agency along with a caption.
