Initiating, Implementing, and Institutionalizing  Reform Evaluation and Dissemination Developing Leadership Capacity for Reform Building Awareness for Reform Assessing Strengths, Opportunities, and Challenges   High-quality professional development is an essential component of an effective science education program. As teachers’ understanding of science and pedagogy increases, they become more able to engage young minds in the sciences.

In 2009 there will be four Smithsonian Science Education Academies for Teachers:
Biodiversity; Earth's History & Global Changes; Energy: Past, Present & Future; and Ecological Field Studies.

Professional Development Courses can be provided in your district. We welcome the opportunity to develop working relationships with your school district and to customize services to your needs.

  • You identify the course or courses that meet the needs of your teachers.
  • You choose the location of the training.
  • The NSRC will arrange combinations of courses or development programs that fit your professional development event.

We partner with you to:

  • Provide courses to meet your school district’s science professional development needs
  • Collaborate on Math/Science Partnerships to include NSRC professional development services as part of your proposal
  • Provide support for summer courses for teachers
  • Incorporate professional development into business and school district partnerships

Our courses address the National Science Education Standards

The PDC can ensure that your science teachers have a base of scientific knowledge and skills that enable them to:

  • Understand the nature of scientific inquiry and its central role in science
  • Use the skills and processes of scientific inquiry
  • Understand the fundamental concepts that underlie the major science disciplines
  • Make conceptual connections within and across science disciplines, as well as with mathematics, technology, and other content areas
