Internships in the Mid Atlantic Region

Current Internship Opportunities

Exhibitions development - Physical site is Chestnut Street - between 9th and 10th, Philadelphia, Pa. Work with exhibition program staff in the preparation of upcoming exhibitions. Includes opportunities to do secondary, and in some cases primary, research related to upcoming exhibits.

Special requirements: We welcome applications from creative students interested in engaging the public with innovative history centered programming. Students must write well. Graphics design and computer skills are a plus. A background in history, political science, museum science, or a related field would be especially valuable.

Education programs - Physical site is at Chestnut Street - between 9th and 10th, Philadelphia, Pa. 19107. The Mid Atlantic program is currently supporting the Philadelphia School Districts Teaching American History Grants.

Assist in researching and preparing educational/curriculum products (in print or digital format). Assist with onsite teacher workshops and program content development.

Special requirements: We welcome applications from creative students interested in history centered education, particularly for grades K-12. Students must write well. Computer graphics and web design skills are a plus. A background in history, political science, museum science, or a related field would be especially valuable. Education majors are also desired.

Outreach program. This internship may require working between the two Mid Atlantic facilities in Philadelphia: Chestnut Street, between 9th and 10th and 14700 Townsend Road.

Assist in a variety of the ongoing outreach activities to the public and federal agencies. Duties include administrative and clerical tasks as well as some substantive projects. Support in handling media and in the development of outreach products and programs, including regional workshops.

Special requirements: An interest in history or records/information management is necessary. Interest in public affairs and marketing would be valuable. Computer skills are desirable.

Program operations activities. Physical location will depend on the nature of the work - Market Street, between 9th and 10th, Philadelphia or 14700 Townsend Road, Philadelphia.

Assist in a variety of assignments in archival and/or records management work.

Archives assignments may include assisting with collection accessioning and processing, public reference, preparing physical inventories and finding aids, and collection preservation.

Records management assignments may include assisting staff with records schedule development, consulting on information and records systems, and records center appraisal and disposal analysis.

Special requirements: Archives, library and information management students may find this internship of interest. Background in American history valuable. Knowledge of desktop software is desirable.

The Mid Atlantic region invites undergraduates and graduate level students to submit applications for a voluntary internship program. Our internships are valuable to students from a range disciplines and are exceptional opportunities to students with majors in:

Hours and Payment

Each student internship requires a minimum of 160 hours of service. These internships do not provide a stipend or any other form of compensation. However, an intern may quality for the agency's Transit Subsidy program, which underwrites the cost of travel to and from the work site.

The Mid Atlantic program does offer a limited number of paid Student Work positions.

Internships can be arranged anytime during the year, and there is no application deadline. Interested students should submit four documents:

  1. Resume, detailing education and work experience
  2. Copy of his/her official transcript(s)
  3. Letter of recommendation from faculty member
  4. Letter indicating type of internship the students wishes to undertake and why this project is preferred.
