Mission Statement
The mission of the USDA-ARS-Vegetable and Forage Crops Research Unit at Prosser, Washington, is germplasm improvements and development of sustainable integrated cropping systems for irrigated specialty crops, forages, and biofuel crops. This will be accomplished by: (i) Development of specialty crops, forages, and edible legumes germplasm lines with: improved resistance to pests, diseases, and abiotic stresses; enhanced nutritional value, phytonutrients, and processing qualities; and expanded markets. (ii) Development of disease management strategies which integrate: genetic resistance; cropping systems; advanced technologies for plant breeding, and rapid detection of plant pathogens; and chemical and biological control methods. (iii) Development of sustainable irrigated crop rotation systems for specialty biofuel crops for: maximizing economic returns; optimizing management of input resources; improving organic production systems; beneficial uses of agricultural and biofuel byproducts; enhancing soil quality and sustainability; and minimizing negative environmental impacts.
Accomplishments of the above research contribute to the following Strategic Goals of USDA-ARS: (i) Enhance the Competitiveness and Sustainability of Rural and Farm Economies; (ii) Enhance Protection and Safety of the Nation’s Agriculture and Food Supply; and (iii) Protect and Enhance the Nation’s Natural Resource Base and Environment.
