Professional Development Opportunities for Teachers of Science:

Smithsonian Science Education Academies for Teachers 

As part of the world’s premier museum and research complex, the NSRC can provide special access for teachers to the scientists, curators, and educators at the Institution. Most Academy sessions will be held at the museums and research centers of the Smithsonian and other museums and laboratories in or near Washington, D.C.

Academies for 2009 are as follows:

Biodiversity
July 12–17

Energy: Past, Present, & Future
July 19–24

Earth's History & Global Change
July 26–31

Ecological Field Studies
August 2–7, 2009

Each of the Academies is unique in both its approach and science content.

GENERAL ACADEMY INFORMATION:

Each academy includes:

  • Hotel accommodations* for Sunday through Thursday nights;
  • A Sunday evening reception and Academy orientation;
  • Daily breakfast and lunch (Monday through Friday);
  • Special Thursday night celebration dinner or event;
  • Transport to and from the daily events (when appropriate); and
  • All materials and tuition.

*One additional person—spouse, friend, child—may stay in the participant’s room at a small additional cost. Participants from the same area may choose to share a room at a reduction of $350.


Academies do not include:

  • Travel to and from the hotel from your point of arrival in Washington;*
  • Parking fees;
  • Evening meals Sunday through Wednesday; or
  • Fees associated with university credits

*For the Ecological Field Studies Academy in Front Royal, Virginia, limited transportation may be provided to and from Dulles or Reagan National airport. Contact the Professional Development Center, nsrcpdcenter@si.edu, for details.

College Credit

Optional graduate credit for the 2009 Academies is available through Virginia Commonwealth University for an additional $300. More information to come.

Accomodations

Hotel accommodations for the Washington DC academies will be at the Holiday Inn Captital, 550 C Street, SW, Washington, DC 20024. See www.hicapitaldc.com. *Participants need not contact the hotel directly for reservations—service is provided by the Professional Development Center.

Accomodations for the Ecological Field Studies Academy will be in Front Royal, VA.
