NSRC Gulf Coast LASER K–12 Science Education Leadership Development and Strategic Planning Institute

Join other forward-thinking school districts on the precipice of a national science education movement.

Since 1998, 1,200 school districts representing more than 30% of the US K–12 student population have participated in 65 week-long LASER Science Education Leadership Devlopment and Strategic Plannning Institutes to develop five-year strategic plans for reforming their K–12 science education programs.

The National Science Resources Center invites you to participate in the NSRC 2009 Gulf Coast K–12 Science Education Leadership Development and Strategic Planning Institute.                                                            


What: An intensive 5½-day working institute to guide your school districts through the rigorous process of developing a tailored strategic plan—a plan for initiating and implementing an effective research-based science education program founded in  best practices.

When: April 19–24, 2009 

Where: New Orleans, Louisiana
Cost:

Registration fee before February 15, $8,400 per seven-person team ($1,200 per participant)
Registration fee after February 15, $9,800 per seven-person team ($1,400 per participant)

Who Should Attend?

A seven-person leadership team committed to the improvement of science education composed of:

  • Two administrators (superintendent, assistant superintendent, curriculum coordinators, etc.)
  • Three science teachers (one elementary, one middle school, one high school)
  • Two scientists, engineers or community leaders representing a corporation, academic institution, museum, science technology center, foundation, government, or other nonprofit organization

About the Institute

During this five and a half-day program of interactive workshops and discussions, school district leadership teams will:

  • Develop a five-year strategic plan;
  • Explore engaging research on student cognitive development and motivation, and its implications for science learning and teaching;
  • Participate ina simulation that informs participants about how to bring change to a school system;
  • Examine exemplary research-based K–12 science curricula; and
  • Address the NSRC's five elements of reform: curriculum, professional development, materials support, assessment and administrative and community support.
