The National Science Resources Center (NSRC) provides curriculum, publications, professional development, and other services that support the improvement of science teaching. Meeting National Science Education Standards and Other Education Standards Online lectures and discussions
Our publisher, Carolina Biological Supply Company, offers online support for the STC and STC/MS curricula, including tips, updates, and an online STC® Program Update newsletter, updated quarterly. STC BOOKSTM are available through the National Academies Press. Annotated resource guides on other research-based curricula. In these guides curricula were evaluated by panels of teachers and scientists who used carefully developed criteria based on the National Science Education Standards.
The NSRC's curricula, Science and Technology for Children® (STC), and Science and Technology Concepts for Middle SchoolsTM (STC/MS)were developed to meet the National Science Education Standards. Our publisher, Carolina Biological Supply Company, offers detailed information on how STC and STC/MS correlate to science education and other standards.
The NSRC Professional Development Center focuses on products and services tailored to its exemplary K-8 curriculum – Science and Technology for Children (STC) and Science and Technology Concepts for Middle Schools (STC/MS). Each summer the National Science Resources Center presents one or more week-long academies for science teachers. These week-long academies combine classroom content sessions with behind-the-scenes visits to museums and research facilities of the Smithsonian Institution. The NSRC's LASER Center also offers professional development services through some of its activities. Beyond its home Web site, the NSRC offers an STC/MS site. Full of useful links for students, teachers and parents, this site complements the STC/MSTM curriculum. The Smithsonian Institution Libraries' Galaxy of Knowledge site helps to provide the public with access to the Smithsonian's wide-ranging library collection. The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies offers a Smithsonian Education Web site with information for educators, students, and parents. Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum hosts a series of Exploring Space Lectures. Past lectures are featured online. The University of Texas at Austin, Environmental Science Institute offers an online outreach lecture series at http://www.esi.utexas.edu/outreach/lectures.html The LINKS Learning site offers information and tools to help meet the challenges of school reform and inprovement. Science Buddies, www.sciencebuddies.org, is a non-profit organization that provides free online resources for science education. They focus on helping K-12 students do better science fair projects. The Topic Selection Wizard offers a large online library of project ideas and Starter Kits. Science Buddies also offers Ask an Expert, an online forum in which students can ask questions about their projects and get answers from scientists and engineers who volunteer as e-mentors. Science Buddies also maintains a set of teacher resources for science fair planning and a science fair project help guide. The Science Education for Kids site offers resources for children 9-14, their teachers, and parents. The Rainforest Connection web site showcases teleconferences between the NSRC's professional development center and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) connecting select topics to various STC units.
