Research Project:
Host Range Testing of Lygodium Insects in Florida Gainesville Quarantine
Location: IPRL, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Project Number: 6629-22000-009-65
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Nov 21, 2008
End Date: Jun 12, 2009
Objective:
To develop effective biological control of Lygodium microphyllum in Florida through the release of a complex of biological control agents. The main objective of this task is the completion of host range testing of candidate biocontrol insect in the Gainesville Quarantine. In addition, cultures of insects are maintained while they are in the review process (Neomusotima conspurcatalis) and to keep stocks of agents undergoing colonization.
Approach:
Testing will be conducted in the Florida State Quarantine in Gainesville. Host range testing will include adult feeding, ovioposition, larval feeding, and complete development. Test plants are primarily representatives of native and ornamental ferns of Florida and the Caribbean. Particular attention is given to relatives of Lygodium and four Caribbean Lygodium species.
