Federal Lands
The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) manages over 500 million acres of land, or approximately one-fifth of the land endowment in the United States. Federal lands occur in all 50 States and the District of Columbia and contain the majority of the country’s natural resource wealth. The DOI is responsible for 1) protecting and preserving these lands and resources; 2) conducting the business of the U.S. Government on these lands; and 3) providing recreational and other opportunities to the Public.

The USGS Energy Resources Program (ERP), as part of the Department of the Interior, evaluates the complex geologic controls and factors affecting the location, quality, and quantity of energy resources and makes this scientific information available to Congress, land management agencies, and the Public. ERP has developed this web site to promote information access and simplify product discovery for energy-related Federal land research activities and products.
