The Laboratory has a limited number of programs that allow scientists and engineers who have attained stature in their fields an avenue to contribute to the mission of the Laboratory and the Nation. These programs provide opportunities for mutual exchange of technical and scientific knowledge, ideas and theories between the Laboratory and the participant.

Appointments can be three months or less, an academic semester, or a full academic year or sabbatical. The opportunities are limited by available collaborations and/or funding sources.
Selections for the programs are made either by direct application to the Laboratory or through professional contact with Laboratory staff.
The Laboratory encourages temporary faculty appointments and research collaborations. The participant is responsible for developing the collaboration.
