  Can a father establish paternity?
  Question
I have a baby but the mother doesn't want to establish paternit. ; What can I do?
  Answer
States must help parents acknowledge paternity up until the child's eighteenth birthday. Parents are not required to apply for child support enforcement (CSE) services when acknowledging paternity. An unmarried father has the right to request genetic testing to prove that he is the father and he can establish the legal right to a relationship with his child. The CSE agency can help with paternity establishment and, if you apply for CSE services, staff in the child support office will be able to tell you how to get help to establish a visitation order to give you the right to a relationship with your child.
If you apply for CSE Services for paternity establishment, you should be aware that a child support order will also be established and you will be required to pay support for your child. State CSE agency telephone numbers and addresses are at:
