1/06/09 - $600 Million in Disaster and Social Services Assistance Released
HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced the release of $600 million in disaster and social services assistance to help those impacted by hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters in 2008 as well as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

12/11/08 - Pennsylvania’s Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program Recognized
The Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP) program has matched over 110,000 boys and girls with caring adult mentors through the works of faith-based and community organizations, state and local governments and tribes.

12/05/08 - Head Start Centers to Receive American Art
To enable Head Start children to explore U.S. history, all 20,000 Head Start centers will receive reproductions of significant American art the Administration for Children and Families’ (ACF) Office of Head Start and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced.

10/16/08 - More Than Five Billion Dollars Released Under LIHEAP
HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced the release of $5.1 billion from the federal government’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) under the Fiscal Year 2009 Continuing Resolution. The funds will assist states, territories, tribal areas and the District of Columbia with addressing their energy needs, particularly for the upcoming winter season.

10/6/08 - Head Start Program Grant Awarded to Prevent Childhood Obesity
The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) announced today, in recognition of the 80th celebration of National Child Health Day, the winner of a $12 million, four-year grant to prevent overweight and obesity among young children in Head Start programs nationwide.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced today the findings of a new report that showcase innovations in child support enforcement through programs encouraging healthy marriage.

9/17/08 - HHS Provides $121 Million In Energy Assistance
HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced the release of $121 million in energy assistance to help eligible low-income households meet home energy costs.  The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds are expected to provide states with heating assistance for the winter months ahead.

08/29/07 - States To Receive $50 Million In Emergency Energy Assistance
HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced that 12 states will be given $50 million in emergency energy assistance. The funds from the federal government’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) are targeted to states that have experienced much hotter than normal conditions in recent weeks.

04/02/07 - ACF Marks Child Abuse Prevention Month With Annual Child Maltreatment Report
The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS’) Administration for Children and Families (ACF) released its annual report on child maltreatment as it kicks off Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Child Maltreatment 2005 report findings reveal that during the Federal fiscal year 2005, an estimated 899,000 children in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico were determined to be victims of abuse or neglect.

03/22/07 - Targeted Teacher Training Produces Improved Outcomes for Children
Teachers who received targeted training and technical assistance were able to improve young children’s development of language skills, according to a federal report.

02/13/07 - Head Start Kids Get a Healthy Boost
Head Start children and their families could face fewer asthma attacks thanks to a new agreement between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The agencies will work together to educate Head Start families about the risks their children face from secondhand smoke and other environmental asthma triggers.

02/12/07 - Report on Head Start Assessment System Released
A diverse panel of experts has delivered a report containing several recommendations for the Head Start National Reporting System (NRS). The NRS assesses the progress of 4- and 5-year-old Head Start children, focusing on key school readiness skills including early literacy and math, as well as social and emotional adjustment.
