Working at NMAI

The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) is an exciting place to work. Established by an Act of Congress in 1989, NMAI comprises three facilities, each designed following consultations between museum staff and Native peoples. In 2004, NMAI opened its new museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Under the leadership of director Kevin Gover (Pawnee/Comanche), the museum is a gathering place of profound meaning and affirmation for the indigenous people of our land.

NMAI is committed to building and maintaining an environment where merit principles, effective leadership, excellence, and empowerment are respected and valued. Our dedicated workforce enjoys rewarding career opportunities and highly competitive benefit programs. The museum is seeking to build and challenge a workforce with a diversity of skills in the following areas: Exhibitions, Visitor Services, Education, Cultural Arts, Technology, Cultural Information, Administration, Development/Communications, and Curatorial. Job opportunities include entry level, technical, administrative, and professional-level positions. Opportunities are sometimes available for part-time and contractual work. Duty locations include Washington, D.C., Suitland, Maryland, and New York City.

Applications are processed through the Smithsonian’s Office of Human Resources. For more information on NMAI employment opportunities and openings throughout the Smithsonian, please visit the Smithsonian Institution Career Center.
