President Bush to Recognize Delray Beach Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Gordon Stanley upon arrival in Palm Beach, Florida, on Thursday, January 8, 2004. Stanley, 80, has been an active volunteer with the Delray Beach Police Department since 1996.

President George W. Bush will meet Gordon Stanley upon arrival in Palm Beach, Florida, on Thursday, January 8, 2004. Stanley, 80, has been an active volunteer with the Delray Beach Police Department since 1996.

Later this month, the USA Freedom Corps – President Bush’s initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation – will celebrate its second anniversary. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country, like Stanley, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

For the past seven years, Stanley has been an active volunteer with several important police department programs. As a member of the Downtown Walking Patrol, Stanley patrols downtown areas of his community, serves as a liaison to store owners and citizens, and observes and reports suspicious or criminal activity to the police. In 1997, Stanley helped form the Volunteer Marine Patrol, where he joins additional volunteers on a police boat and helps patrol waterways in order to monitor boat activity and educate citizens about boating safety. In May 2002, Stanley was one of the first volunteers to serve as part of the new Volunteer Homefront Security Program that was developed by the Delray Beach Police Department following September 11, 2001. As a volunteer, Stanley helps monitor specific areas in the Delray Beach community considered to be more sensitive than others such as government buildings and city water stations. Stanley also serves as a member of the Delray Beach Police Department’s Volunteer Advisory Board.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
