President Bush to recognize Chicago Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Anthony Calhoun upon arrival in Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday, January 7, 2003. Calhoun, a Chicago native, volunteers each week as a mentor for students in the Chicago area.

President George W. Bush will meet Anthony Calhoun when he arrives in Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday, January 7, 2003. Calhoun, a Chicago native, volunteers each week as a mentor for students in the Chicago area.

In his State of the Union address, President Bush called on all Americans to dedicate at least two years over their lifetime in service to their communities, our country and the world. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country who are answering the call to service and will recognize Calhoun as example of the dedication to service he is hoping to instill in all Americans through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.

Calhoun, a supply chain manager at Quaker Foods & Beverages, has volunteered for the past five years teaching 8th grade students about business economics through a company partnership with Chicago public schools. During Quaker Job Shadow Days, Calhoun speaks with students about the importance of staying in school and building skills such as creating a resume. Calhoun is also an active member of the Knights of Peter Claver and volunteers with the Junior Knights program mentoring young men ages seven to 18. In addition, Calhoun serves on the board of directors for Chicago Commons, a not-for-profit organization that provides social services to help individuals and families become more self-sufficient.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world.
