Q: What is GENSAT?
A: GENSAT stands for Gene Expression Nervous System ATlas. The GENSAT project aims to map the expression of all genes expressed in the mouse brain at various stages of development. The project focuses on two techniques

  • Evaluation of unmodified mice lines for expression of a given gene using radiolabelled riboprobes and in-situ hybridization.
  • Creation of transgenic mice lines containing a BAC construct that expresses a marker gene in the same environment as the native gene
A description of the techniques can be found here and in the following articles: A detailed description of the methods used to construct the BAC transgenic mouse lines can be found here.

Q: Are there any restrictions on the use of the GENSAT data?
A: The data generated from the GENSAT project are freely available for public or private use. We do request that the project be cited in any derivative works; the recommended citation is:
The Gene Expression Nervous System Atlas (GENSAT) Project, NINDS Contract # N01NS02331 to The Rockefeller University (New York, NY).

Q: Who is responsible for the GENSAT project?
A: The GENSAT project is funded by a grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). There are two institutions responsible for generating data for the GENSAT project. The in-situ hybridization data are generated at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital under the auspices of Dr. Tom Curran. The BAC transgenic data are generated at The Rockefeller University under the care of Dr. Nathanial Heintz. A list of the people involved in the GENSAT project can be found here. The GENSAT project is also served by an advisory committee of NIH intramural and extramural advistors; the list of advisory committee members can be found here.

Q: How can I contact the GENSAT project?
A: For questions relating to this site please email the NCBI Help Desk at info@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov; the Help Desk will forward any request to the GENSAT team. To contact the GENSAT project co-ordinators at the Rockefeller University, please visit http://www.gensat.org/contact.jsp.

Q: How can I nominate my favorite gene for review and analysis?
A: Please submit your request through the Gene Nomination page at the GENSAT project directly.

Q: Can I get access to the modified mouse strains?
A: Yes! The modified mouse lines are being deposited in the Mutant Mouse Regional Resource Center (MMRRC). Catalogs are also available through the MMRRC Catalog Listing. We hope at some point in the near future to provide a direct link from the images in the GENSAT database to MMRRC pages describing the line and how to access it.
