In mid-1997, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) began developing a comprehensive program to adopt a holistic resource management process. The primary objective is to develop strategies for sustainable resource planning and management. The core of this approach is to utilize principles of ecosystem management, application of new technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS), and implementation of adaptive management techniques to sustain the diversity and productivity of Michigan's natural resources.

Principles of Ecosystem-Based Management
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the State's natural resources for current and future generations.

Criteria and Indicators
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is incorporating international, national, and regional efforts to identify criteria that define sustainable resources and indicators that measure progress toward the sustainable management of natural resources.
