ad hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Modern Biotechnology
Host Government: Japan
The ad hoc Intergovernmental Task for on Foods Derived from Modern Biotechnology was reestablished by the 27th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Its mandate is to elaborate standards, guidelines, or recommendations, as appropriate, for foods derived from modern biotechnology or traits introduced into foods by modern biotechnology, on the basis of scientific evidence, risk analysis and having regard, where appropriate, to other legitimate factors relevant to the health of consumers and the promotion of fair practice in the food trade. These are to be developed taking account, in particular, of the Principles for the Risk Analysis of Foods derived from Modern Biotechnology. The Task Force shall complete its work within four years, submitting a full report in 2009.
Given that three proposed documents were advanced to step 5/8 at the 7th Session, no further sessions are foreseen. Should the need arise for another session of the Task Force following consideration of the proposed drafts by the 31st Session of the Commission in July 2008, Japan will make the necessary arrangements in consultation with The Codex Secretariat.
