vector graphics | a resolution independant (fully scalable) graphic made of lines and curves defined by mathematical geometrical objects called vectors. ie: logos, flat art

raster images | a bitmapped image made up of small squares called pixels. These images are dependant upon image resolution and should not be scaled beyond their actual size. ie: photographic imagery.
