He Called It 'The Great Republic'

On April 17, 1945, British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill addressed the House of Commons on the occasion of President Franklin Roosevelt's death. He said of his friend and ally: "In war he had raised the strength, might and glory of the great Republic to a height never attained by any nation in history."

"Churchill and the Great Republic," on view in the Library of Congress' Jefferson Building through June 26, 2004, is the first comprehensive exhibition of Churchill material in the United States.

This exhibition examines the life and career of Winston Spencer Churchill and emphasizes his lifelong links with the United States. The exhibition comes nearly 40 years after the death of Winston Churchill and 60 years after the D-Day Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France during World War II. It commemorates both of these events.

"Churchill and the Great Republic" draws on the unparalleled collection of materials in the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge, England. This is the first time that these materials are exhibited comprehensively in the United States. The exhibition also features the remarkable Library of Congress holdings relating to Churchill and his life. A number of items, drawn from the rich, multiformat collections of the Library, are newly uncovered and have never been previously displayed.

If you cannot come to the Library, you can see an online version of the Churchill exhibition on this Web site. More than 40 other Library of Congress exhibitions are offered in the Exhibitions Web site.

Images of Churchill in various phases of his life can be found in the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog. Type "Winston Churchill" in the search box. If you then click on "Gallery View," you will see thumbnails of the available images. There's even a portrait of actress Tallulah Bankhead with a lion cub named Winston Churchill!
