House Votes to Extend Children’s Health Insurance Program
Washington DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to extend health insurance to four million children of working families unable to afford coverage.  The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is aimed at working families who cannot afford coverage, and today’s vote will allow that program to expand enrollment from 7 million children to 11 million children nationwide.

House Passes Fair Wage Legislation

Washington DC – Today, the House of Representatives passed legislation to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work.  The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 11) and the Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 12) will close a number of loopholes and enact reforms to make it more difficult for employers to pay workers less because of their sex or their race.

Northland Communities Receive Federal Firefighting Grants

Washington DC – Communities across Northeast Minnesota will receive federal funding for firefighting and emergency response equipment and training.  Today, Congressman Jim Oberstar announced that the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) will award $688,150 to twelve communities in the 8th Congressional District

Oberstar: 2009 will be a Historic Year for Transportation

Washington DC – Congressman Jim Oberstar says 2009 will be a big year for the nation’s roads, bridges and other transportation systems.  As chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Oberstar is planning to introduce and pass what he is calling “the largest transportation investment package since the creation of the Interstate Highway system in the 1950s.”
