Our Children Deserve a World Class Education

My years teaching at Sunnyvale High School were some of the best years of my life. As any parent would agree, there are few things more rewarding in life than helping a child reach his or her potential. Unfortunately, the American educational system requires substantial reform to help ensure that the next generation has the skills they need to compete in an increasingly globalized world.

Tickets for the Inauguration

In just a few days, Senator Barack Obama will become America’s 44th President. Just as he has shown great creativity and determination in his approaches to solving the challenges facing our nation, President-Elect Obama has also been a bold innovator in the way he has engaged with the public over the internet.

Following the exciting trail blazed by our next President, I decided to allocate inauguration tickets to constituents through two online programs.

Focusing on our students:
A town hall discussion
about our education system

I recently held my first Telephone Town Hall on our nation's education policies. I focused this inaugural Telephone Town Hall on education because, as a former high school teacher, principal, and school board member, education has always been my top priority.

With the increased global competition facing our nation, education reform is one of the most critical challenges facing our nation.

The Telephone Town Hall allowed me to connect with thousands of constituents and was a great chance to talk about the state of education in California and across our nation.

Enhancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education (STEM) Act of 2008

Ensuring American competitiveness in an increasingly global economy requires significant improvements in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

I sponsored the Enhancing STEM Act to improve STEM education coordination among Federal and state governments. The Enhancing STEM Act provides Federal Agencies and states with the infrastructure required to work collaboratively, establish national STEM education goals, and to coordinate STEM education initiatives.

I developed the bill with my distinguished colleague, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), who introduced a companion bill (S.3047) with Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN).

Today, Rep. Mike Honda (CA-15) was a key player in securing a major victory for America’s legal immigrants by ensuring that their children will now receive health insurance. The victory was part of H.R. 2, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization bill, passed today by the US House of Representatives.

Today, Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA) was re-appointed to his powerful House Appropriations subcommittee appointments on Labor, Health, Human Services, Education and Related Agencies, as well as Commerce, Justice and Science.  For his Appropriation’s Legislative Branch subcommittee assignments, Honda assumed the vice-chairmanship.

This week, the U.S. Congress honored a pioneer in California’s Asian American community, when it named the Lundy Avenue Main Post Office in Santa Clara after Gordon N. Chan, a leader in the area’s  agricultural industry and in community service.
