Rosa Speaks on Her Bill H.R. 12 the Paycheck Fairness Act

The U.S. House of Representatives, passed the Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 12), introduced by Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3). The legislation aims to close the wage gap between men and women by strengthening and giving teeth to the Equal Pay Act and closing loopholes that have allowed employers to avoid responsibility for discriminatory pay. The bill was approved overwhelmingly by a vote of 256-163. The measure, along with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, was among the first to be considered by the 111th Congress and reflects the importance of pay equity. Watch Video

On January 20, 2008, President-elect Barack Obama will be sworn-in as our nation’s 44th President. This is a truly historic milestone. Officials in Washington are preparing for an unprecedented number of Americans to visit the nation’s Capitol to witness President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration. The residents of Connecticut’s 3rd congressional district are equally interested in witnessing history as thousands of constituents have contacted my office to request inauguration tickets.

Inauguration tickets for the grounds of the U.S. Capitol are extremely limited. My office, as with each Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, will receive only 198 tickets to the swearing-in. My office has received requests for nearly 5,000 tickets. In an effort to be as fair as possible, my office held a lottery the week of December 22nd to select constituents to receive a limited number of inauguration tickets. We have contacted individuals who will receive tickets.

While only a very limited of number of tickets to the swearing-in ceremony are available, you can attend the Inaugural festivities without a ticket. The entire length of the National Mall will be opened to the public so that more people than ever before will be able to watch and hear President-elect Obama’s swearing-in and speech. You can also attend the Inaugural Parade, which will take the newly sworn-in President Obama from the U.S. Capitol to the White House, without a ticket.
