In Focus | Edward Steichen

Actress Mary Heberden, 1935.

The illustrious career of Edward Steichen crossed so many genres of photography but some of my favorite of his works are his fashion images. Nearly 200 of his photographs will be included in a show at The International Center of Photography (beginning Jan 16th) that focuses on the field of fashion photography. Steichen possessed a painterly ability to capture and glamorize fashion which revolutionized the field, and his influence can still be seen today.

These are truly masterpieces by an absolute master! I’m reminded of the old saying, “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. Look at the photos of Gary Cooper and something as simple as a pair of shoes… Steichen’s self-portrait is a classic example of both composition and lighting! Did somebody say something about “digital”? A true master photographer doesn’t need to manipulate images to achieve the desired effect — Steichen knew what he wanted to convey and how to accomplish it!

In the very beginning, when the operator controls and regulates his time of exposure, when in the dark room the developer is mixed for detail, breath, flatness or contrast, faking has been resorted to. In fact every photograph is a fake from start to finish, a purely impersonal, unmanipulated photograph being practically impossible. When all is said, it still remains entirely a matter of degree and ability.

just because these images are not digital doesn’t mean that they are un-manipulated. it just means that they were edited by hand instead of on a computer.

great images but they don’t even come close to revealing the true genus that edward possessed. years ago i got the privilege of seeing a large body of his street scenes and “landscapes” and i am still awed.
