What kind of information is included in the inventory?

The purpose of the inventory is to provide a brief overview of qualitative research conducted on the topics of nutrition, physical activity, and other related fields.

For each study, information is included about the topic, target audience, purpose, sample population, data collection date, methods, available documents, and contact person.

Ideally, the level of detail included in the inventory and the categories of information for each study allow you decide if you want to contact an organization or person for more information about a particular study.

Where did you get the information in the directory?

The CDC called for a submission of research to the inventory through various agencies, including state health departments, non-governmental nutrition and physical activity organizations, and nutrition, physical activity, social marketing, and communication electronic listservs. Entries were submitted voluntarily.

Was the quality of the research in the inventory reviewed?

There are no quality criteria for including research in the inventory. Therefore, the CDC does not necessarily endorse these studies or their results.

How can the online directory help me to improve qualitative research and programming in my organization?

Using the online search, you can find qualitative research by topic, target audience, or any keywords included in the research description.

The results of your searches can help you

  • Contact organizations that are conducting similar studies, to share ideas.
  • Exchange ideas about research topics, findings, and potential intervention strategies.
  • Share qualitative research instruments and tools.

How can I get more information about specific research?

Each study in the inventory has a designated contact person to discuss the research or a Web site for more information. You can find this contact information in the search results.

I noticed a mistake in a research entry for my organization, and I also want to add additional research to the inventory. How can I do this?

To make the inventory as accurate and complete as possible, you are encouraged to submit changes and additions whenever they are necessary.

To edit an existing entry or share new research, please send your changes or comments to us using the contact us page.

My search term brought up results for other keywords. Why?

Certain words or phrases may be synonyms of your keywords. Therefore, your search will return related keywords. Here are some examples:

  • Entering "5 A Day" will also return results for "Fruits and Vegetables," "Fruit," "Vegetables," and "F&V."
  • Entering "Physical Activity" will also return results for "Exercise" and "Fitness."
  • Entering "Youth"  will also return results for "Kids," "Children," "Teens," "Tweens," "Adolescents," and "Preschool."
