Welcome
Purdue
Agricultural Research Programs (ARP) is Indiana's research-based
link in the nationwide land-grant
university system.
Nationally,
ARP participates in multistate
research programs with other State Agricultural Experiment Stations
(SAES) in partnership with Cooperative State Research, Education,
and Extension Service (CSREES) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) to ensure that research on high-priority topics are addressed,
research results are shared, and duplication of effort is avoided.
In this way, technological opportunities and complex problem solving
activities which are beyond the scope of a single SAES, can be approached
in a more efficient and comprehensive way.
The
land grant program began with the Hatch
Act of 1887, which charged land-grant universities to establish
a research arm to advance science and solve problems for the food,
agricultural, and natural resource system.
At
Purdue, ARP facilitates innovative science by providing administrative
support to departments
and faculty in the College
of Agriculture, College
of Consumer and Family Sciences, and School
of Veterinary Medicine by ensuring the availability of
necessary facilities, and by encouraging development of interdisciplinary
research programs. ARP also helps faculty identify and compete for
extramural
funding opportunities.
Our
faculty are involved in cutting edge, discovery research and mission
oriented, adaptive and disseminative research, which addresses questions
from the fundamental to meeting the needs of various commodity groups
based on science. They address research problems from a local to
global scale that include production agriculture to plant and animal
breeding and genetics, human and animal health, genomics and biotechnology,
biobased products, biofuels and energy, food defense and food safety,
human nutrition, environmental and natural resource management,
land use and management, biodiversity and invasive species, ecological
crop management, technology transfer, business administration, and
socioeconomic assessment of emerging scientific discoveries, etc.
These scientific endeavors are supported by a portfolio of gifts,
grants, and contracts from various state and federal
agencies such as the National
Institutes of Health, the National
Science Foundation, the United
States Department of Agriculture, the Environmental
Protection Agency, the United
States Agency for International Development, the United
States Department of Energy, etc., and various commodity groups
such as the United Soybean
Board, Indiana
Wine Grape Council, the Indiana
Soybean Board, the Indiana
State Poultry Association, etc.
Research
is undertaken in laboratories and field sites with state-of-the-art
facilities on the campus of Purdue University, including Discovery
Park . Across Indiana, ARP operates eight Purdue
Agricultural Centers in areas representative of the state's
varied soil types and microclimates, where facilities for site-specific
research are available, and research results are conveyed to local
farmers and other residents.
ARP
also works closely with the Purdue
Cooperative Extension Service (CES) and the Indiana
State Department of Agriculture to transfer the research-based
knowledge generated by Purdue faculty and staff to citizens in all
of Indiana's 92 counties. Similarly, ARP serves as a liaison with
various Indiana commodity groups.
Nationally,
ARP coordinates research programs with other land-grant university
agricultural experiment stations to ensure that important problems get attention, to share research
results, and to avoid duplication of effort. ARP also works closely
with Purdue CES so that our research efforts can be communicated
effectively to all of our stakeholders and the general public.
