STATEMENT BY
HHS SECRETARY TOMMY G. THOMPSON
ON THE DEATH OF SENATOR PAUL WELLSTONE

I am saddened by the death of Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone. Senator Wellstone was always a man of unwavering convictions, dedication and devotion to his work, his family, the state of Minnesota and our nation.

My family's thoughts and prayers are with Senator Wellstone's two surviving children and grandchildren. He was a neighbor and a friend, and the people of Wisconsin mourn his death as well. It is a tragic loss for our nation -- and especially family members -- any time we lose someone as young as the Senator, his wife and his daughter.

I also would like to extend my deepest condolences and prayers to the families and loved ones of the other passengers on the plane.
