TOMMY G. THOMPSON
On Passage of the Nurse Reinvestment Act

The Nurse Reinvestment Act marks a significant step forward in America's commitment to ensuring that our health care system remains the best in the world.

Nurses are first-responders, not just to crises but also to the everyday medical needs of people of all ages and from every background. Providing incentives for young people to become involved in nursing, offering resources for expanded nurse training and helping nurses advance in their careers are essential parts of the act. And they are essential to the kind of quality care the American people deserve.

In 1980, about half of all registered nurses were under the age of 40. But by 2000, less than a third were under 40. Nearly 20 percent of all licensed registered nurses have left active nursing. This is yet another reason why we need to support America's nurses.

Ultimately, the Nurse Reinvestment Act is about helping to make sure that the men, women and children of our country have the best health care in the world. That's a fundamental priority of this Administration, and one we are committed to achieving for every person in our great nation.
