STATEMENT BY
HHS SECRETARY TOMMY G. THOMPSON
Regarding House Approval of Medicare Prescription Drug Legislation

Early this morning, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a strong, effective bill that would provide seniors with a Medicare drug benefit program that will result in needed savings on their prescription drugs. This is an important step in our efforts to achieve Medicare prescription drug coverage this year. Seniors should not have to wait any longer.

President Bush and I will continue to work with both parties in Congress to get meaningful, affordable Medicare drug coverage enacted into law this year. Congress must continue to work together and pass a bill that the President can sign this year. The House bill approved today represents a major step toward achieving this critical goal, and the leadership should be congratulated for their efforts.
