STATEMENT BY
HHS SECRETARY TOMMY G. THOMPSON
REGARDING PRESIDENT BUSH'S PROPOSED DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY

President Bush is taking bold action to strengthen the security of our homeland. He's making it clear that our nation needs a cohesive department dedicated solely to protecting our citizens from terrorism or attack on the homefront. I support his sweeping proposal and look forward to working with Congress on securing its passage. And I look forward to working with my friend, Tom Ridge, on creation of this new department.

These are new times with new enemies facing our nation. The President is right to restructure government so we are strongly positioned to fight these enemies and protect our people from attack. Our nation and our borders will be stronger as a result of this action.
