One of the first things Secretary Thompson asked me to address is this issue of health care disparities. We are addressing this through the education of both patients and providers, and through promoting the use of technology allowing individuals and their physicians to have access to the finest science-based medicine available.
We are providing greater access to primary health care through community health centers in America with a $114 million increase for an estimated 170 new or expanded sites, and over 800 new health care providers to practice in underserved areas.
We are also working to reduce the number of uninsured in this country by providing flexibility to states through the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
Finally, we are funding new research at the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration to impact the health outcomes of all Americans, with specific focus on the health status of minorities.
