JOE NU�EZ JOINS HHS AS REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE
FOR DENVER REGION


HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson has appointed Joe Nu�ez as the Secretary's regional representative for region VIII, based in Denver, Colo.

In his new position, Nu�ez will be the Secretary's direct representative responsible for guidance and coordination of HHS policies in the region. The area includes the states of Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.

"Joe Nu�ez's tenure in the Colorado state legislature and his personal history of civic duty uniquely arm him with the knowledge of issues affecting that area of the country," said Secretary Thompson. "His professional experiences will be invaluable to the mission of HHS."

For the past several years, Nu�ez has held various leadership roles in state government, most recently as a representative in the Colorado state legislature. He was a member of the Appropriations Committee and vice chair of the State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee.

From 1986 to 1993, Nu�ez was the Colorado-based regional representative for the U.S. Department of Labor and worked extensively on issues surrounding drugs in the workplace, child care, transportation and job placement.

Nu�ez is also a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel and has been stationed in Japan, Thailand and Puerto Rico. He served as an instructor for a U.S. Department of State-sponsored training program for the Panamanian National Guard, and worked as a congressional liaison officer in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon. Additionally, Nu�ez has received several decorations, including the Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Nu�ez received a master's in education from Inter American University in Puerto Rico and a bachelor's from the University of Northern Colorado. He is also an honors graduate from Yale University's Japanese Language Institute. Nu�ez is married with four children and eight grandchildren.

Nu�ez's post became official Dec. 31, 2001.
