AIDS Care Veteran Named to PHS Policy Post

HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Philip R. Lee, M.D., who heads the U.S. Public Health Service, today announced the selection of Eric P. Goosby, M.D., as the new director of the PHS Office of HIV/AIDS Policy. Dr. Lee said, "Dr. Goosby's extensive experience, personal commitment and compassionate temperament uniquely qualify him for this important job."

As principal AIDS advisor to the assistant secretary for health, Dr. Goosby will advise on the HIV/AIDS policies, programs, and budget development of the eight Public Health Service agencies.

Dr. Goosby joined the Public Health Service in 1991 as director of the division of HIV services in the Bureau of Health Resources Development, Health Resources and Services Administration. His primary responsibility was to administer the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Act, overseeing the development of medical and support services in eligible metropolitan epicenters, the 50 states and the territories.

Before joining the Public Health Service, Dr. Goosby served as associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, and associate medical director of the AIDS Clinic at San Francisco General Hospital.

While at San Francisco General, he conceived of a way to provide treatment to HIV-infected/intravenous drug dependent patients through three medical facilities he established in methadone treatment centers to focus on HIV-infected clients. He has worked on AIDS Clinical Trials Group studies as a principal investigator and a co-investigator, and participated in numerous clinical studies looking at the medical care of HIV-infected patients.

Dr. Goosby has written numerous publications on the provision of care and services to HIV-infected individuals. He has served on HIV-related committees for municipalities, states, professional organizations, community based organizations and medical schools throughout the country.

A native Californian, Dr. Goosby graduated from Princeton University and the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, where he performed his residency in primary care and held a fellowship in internal medicine.
