Attorney General Reno and HHS Secretary Shalala
Announce Advisory Council on Violence Against Women


On Thursday, July 13, Attorney General Janet Reno and Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala will attend a press conference to announce the creation of an Advisory Council onViolence Against Women. Immediately following the announcement, both Attorney General Reno and Secretary Shalala will attend the day-long first meeting of the Advisory Council. The press conference and the meeting are open to print and electronic media.

The Advisory Council will provide Attorney General Reno and Secretary Shalala with practical and general policy advice concerning the implication of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which was enacted as part of the 1994 Crime Bill. In addition, the Advisory Council will work to bring national attention to the problem of violence against women and increase public awareness of the need for improved strategies to curb these crimes.

The Advisory Council will be composed of 40 members from a broad range of professions, including law enforcement, public health, business, academics, journalism, victim advocacy, religion and entertainment.
