Sullivan, M.D., today announced that the Rev. Lewis M. Anthony, pastor of Varick Memorial AME Zion Church in Washington, D.C., will be the keynote speaker for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative program to be held at the Department of Health and Human Services. The program, jointly sponsored by HHS, the Department of Education, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the United States Information Agency, will be held Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Humphrey Building, 200 Independence Ave. S.W. Music for the occasion will be provided by the Omega Psi Phi Gospel Choir, Kappa Psi Chapter, of Howard University Divinity School. George E. Holmes is choir coordinator. This year's theme, marking the 63rd anniversary of the Jan. 15, 1929, birth of Dr. King, is "Living the Dream: Let Freedom Ring." A native of Washington, Rev. Anthony has been pastor of the Varick Memorial AME Zion Church since May 25, 1986. Before that he was assistant pastor for seven years of his childhood church, Union Wesley AME Zion, and served for two years as pastor of the John Wesley AME Zion Church in Baltimore. Rev. Anthony is a graduate of the Anacostia High School, Columbia and Harvard universities. He is the recipient of numerous awards and citations, including the Van Am Prize Medal of Columbia University, the Distinguished Public Service Award of the District of Columbia, the Grassroots Award for Community Service from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the National Trio Achievers Award of the National Council of Educational Opportunity Associations. In addition to Secretary Sullivan, other program participants include Paul C. Johnson III of HHS, presiding; Marian Green, ED; Doris Grant, HHS; Anthony Lopes, FEMA; Nancy Silvers, HHS; Purnell Swett, ED; Schuyler J. Baab, HHS; and Nittaya Maphungphong, USIA. ####
