Shalala today announced the award of $199,500 to the State of New Mexico to provide crisis nurseries services for abused and neglected children or children who are at risk of abuse and neglect. The aim of the project is to utilize a family child care network, in conjunction with local social service agencies and Native American agencies, to provide respite for parents in crisis, parents experiencing a situation that places them at risk for child maltreatment, and families with drug affected infants. "This crisis nurseries program can offer parents the needed option of time away as a preventive measure to reduce the incidence of child maltreatment and protect children by providing a safe environment," said Secretary Shalala. The New Mexico Crisis Nurseries program will provide services to the County of San Juan which emphasize prevention, intervention, and remediation services with the intent of preserving families by offering support and strengthening the parent-to-child bond. ###
