Shalala today announced the award of $15.8 million in noncompetitive continuation cooperative agreements to the national AIDS Education and Training Centers Program, a network of 17 regional centers serving the 50 states, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Established in 1987, the goal of the centers is to increase the number of health care providers who are trained to counsel, diagnose, treat and manage people living with HIV and AIDS and to assist in preventing the high-risk behaviors that lead to HIV infection. Located in medical schools, university health centers and schools of public health, centers train health professions faculty and students as well as current practitioners. The centers are located in cities and surburban areas with high numbers of AIDS patients. In the current project period, 10 percent of program funds have been used to support two rural training centers. Secretary Shalala said, "During its seven-year history, this program has trained more than 400,000 health providers to care for both the clinical and personal needs of those living with HIV/AIDS and their families. The training that these centers provide to primary care professionals and students is invaluable in the fight against AIDS." The AETC Program also serves as a resource center that provides current, accurate information about HIV resources, drug trials and referrals. A key service is the dissemination of new HIV-related clinical information through the National HIV Telephone Consultation Service and the Clinical Conference Call Series, both aimed at primary care clinicians who treat AIDS patients. The AETC Program has also made a significant impact in training minority providers and providers who serve minorities. According to Philip R. Lee, M.D., assistant secretary for health and director of the Public Health Service, "The AIDS epidemic is now spreading rapidly among minority populations, and the AETC Program is currently educating providers to help those who have traditionally had problems in accessing health care." The Health Resources and Services Administration, a Public Health Service agency within HHS, administers the AETC Program. A list of the 17 centers and funding for FY 1994 follows. - More -.
