Shalala will honor author and women's rights champion Betty Friedan at the Administration on Aging's May 10 event to kick off this year's Older Americans Month. Freidan's book, "The Feminine Mystique," published over 30 years ago, is heralded as the catalyst for the women's movement. In her new book, "The Fountain of Age," the 73-year-old Friedan challenges the nation's obsession with staying young and insists aging offers a new stage of opportunity and strength. Friedan will be honored for her work and for being a model older American who exemplifies this year's Older Americans Month theme: "Celebrating Long Life and Good Health." Joining Secretary Shalala in presenting the award will be Fernando M. Torres-Gil, assistant secretary for aging. Awards of recognition will also be presented to Willard Scott, of NBC-TV; U.S. National Senior Sports Organization champion Jim Law, 68, "America's Speediest Senior Citizen" and the first senior to be honored with the Silver Eagle Corps award from the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and Alice Scott Kelly, 69, who was recently crowned "Ms. Senior District of Columbia." There will be a special presentation to Secretary Shalala from Assistant Secretary Torres-Gil. May is traditionally designated Older Americans Month by the president in recognition of the contributions and achievements of older Americans. The kick-off event is being held in the Great Hall of the Hubert H. Humphrey Building on Tuesday, May 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Members of the general public and the media are invited to attend. ###
